Sarah’s Song
Posted by rainy at 4:24 pm in Inspirational books

Sarah’s Song is a short inspirational book written by Karen Kingsbury.  The book is centered around a woman named Sarah who lives in an assisted living home, called Greer Retirement Village.  She was young once and lived a full life outside of these walls.  In fact, she could look right outside of her window and see a monument to the place to where it all began and, began again…the bench.

The book opens by describing what 86 year old Sarah describes, in small stingy bits of information, as a sacred ritual.  It is her own six decade ritual of a personal 12 days of Christmas.   The ritual is in remembrance of  her life choices and the consequences that follow as a result.

On the 13th of every December, her ritual is to open envelopes, one a day for 12 days.  Each one contains one paper ornament on which is written, one very important word.  This story contains rich and deep humanity that we all choose to live by; or ignore, according to our whim of the moment.

Sarah teaches us to consider the consequences of living outside of our own value system that has been ingrained in each of us since birth.  She, also indirectly, teaches us the joy in correcting mistakes; so, that we don’t rob ourselves of the fullness of the life intended for us. Edward’s Eyes
Posted by rainy at 3:44 pm in Children's Books

Coming from a large family myself, i could go back to my childhood and relive the experiences in Edward’s Eyes that related to bringing siblings home from the hospital and introducing them into the family.

The story revolves around young Edward who is introduced right from birth.  He is number four in the birth order.  The children, already born, vary in ages from 9 on down to age 3; welcome Edward in various ways.  The oldest is unimpressed…she has been through this before.

The second in line, Will, knows the score….messy diapers and all.  Young Wren is only 5 and reaches out and gently touches the young Edward.  Then there is three year old Jake.  He is so enthralled when the young baby is put in his arms all he can say is “His Eyes”.  Once, Edward looked at him…they were bonded for life. We Belong Together
Posted by rainy at 6:07 pm in Children's Books

We Belong Together, is a childrens book written by Todd Parr.  It is a book about families and adoption.  I am all for books that promote adoption in a positive way.

I would have to say that this book is for fairly young children; most likely children ages 2-5, would appreciate it best.  The book talks about adoption in a way that is easy for young children to understand the basics of becoming part of an adopted family.  I like the focus of everyday family activities that show caring and love.

It talks alot about the needs of the child.  Really though, if the book was read to, or read by, an older child; i think it would be more appropriate to go in depth about the needs that are met for both the parent and the child.

I think some older children might feel somewhat put off thinking that the “needing” was only one-sided; noone likes to feel obligated about being accepted.

As an adoptive parent myself, i know there are a multitude of reasons for adopting.  The need to give and receive love is a basic component of making an adoptive family; it is most definately a two way street.

Todd Parr does a wonderful job of illustrating his book.  His colors are vibrant and upbeat.  It is a happy book.

The publisher of this book is: Little Brown and Company

At Night

At Night

“At Night” written by author Jonathan Bean is a glimpse into a young city girl’s life.  She sometimes has trouble sleeping at night while listening to her family quietly sleeping.

With a restless mind, she feels the breeze through her bedroom window.  She gathers a pillow and blanket and follows the wind to the roof of her home.  There, she fashions a place in a chair for her spirit to contemplate the world around her.

It is here she is finally peaceful enough to rest.   Her mother softly rests her hand on her child and absorbs some of the same peace that her daughter has found, breathing in the cool night air.

This is Jonathan Bean’s first book that combines his written word and his visual artistry.  Jonathan’s website is:  www.jonathanbean.com.  This picture book is for ages 4-8.  The publisher is Farrar, Straus, and Giroux and their website is:  www.fsgkidsbooks.com.  The book can be found at both Amazon and at Barnes and Noble.  Happy reading.

This entertaining book, written by David Ezra Stein, introduces us to a young bear, in his first year of life.  He goes about his happy life until one day the leaves begin to fall.  The young bear shows compassion for the living thing called leaves.  He tries to help them get back to where he thinks they need to be.

He is a little perplexed about Cover Image

the process of the changing seasons.  This book teaches, in a simple way, that life has a rhythm and that there is joy to be found in each phase of life.

David Ezra Stein is also the illustrator of this book, “Leaves”.  The playful pictures are appropriately, full of fall colors. The publisher of Leaves, is G.P Putnam’s Sons, a division of Penguin Young Reader’s Group.  This book can be purchased at Amazon.com or BarnesandNoble.com.
