Wow, this large sized book filled with photographs and illustrations is a book that I wish I would have had as a kid.  The Kids Guide to Nature Adventures would be a great book to give to your kids at the beginning of summer to keep them entertained on those days when they are sure to say that they are bored and don’t have anything to do.  This book solves that problem because it has plenty of things to do which are definately not boring; they are fun and filled with learning experiences.

There are chapters on Hiking, Camping, Wildlife, Mini-Wildlife, Plant Life, Exploring The Shore, and Night Life.  Each chapter has activities, helpful hints, photographs and exploratory ideas.  It is so interesting in fact that I do believe a child looking for something to do will find it between these pages and not even realize that they are learning valuable information!

While the book fosters the idea of exploring the world we live in it also instills practical and solid information about the proper ways to do so; keeping safety and conservation in mind.  I really like how the book teaches kids to practice independent outdoor skills but also, instills the wisdom of keeping adults involved and informed about the activities.

This book is a few years old, it was published in 2003 by Lark Books, a division of Sterling Publishing Co, Inc.    It was written by Joe Rhatigan  and the  photographs were taken by John Widman.

Ted Kennedy Scenes From An Epic Life
Posted by rainy at 6:17 pm in Adult Books, Historical

The Boston Globe has contributed pictures to this book that will amaze you.  This collection of photos and short stories as well as captions to further explain when the photos are trying to communicate give quite the impression that you are delving deeply into the life that has been both historic in nature as well as practical in application as one of the leading senators in the United States.  It is the life of Senator Ted Kennedy.

We follow his upbringing with his family as a youngster, to that of a young married man, to a man seeking to support his brothers in politics, to fleshing out his own place within the realm of power and purpose.  Ted Kennedy has been portrayed in the media over the years as a powerhouse, as a man of mystery, a man of conflicting habits and purpose.  He commands both respect for his troubles, as well as ridicule for some of his personal choices over the years.

In the photos we see documented an individual and a family that has faced adversity and triumph.  We see scandal and we see sacrifice in other photos.  This book is a bit of a time capsule in that it reflects the changing times and the manner in which people adapt to that change.  This book is worth spending some time and money on.

This book was published by Simon & Schuster in 2009.

Knitting The Threads Of Time is a very informative look at the rich history and cultures partaining to women and using textiles to make clothing to nurture and protect those they love from the elements.  The author, Nora Murphy, brilliantly weaves the real life challenge of knitting a sweater for her son while she carefully crafts her transition from an amateur knitter to a woman of confidence as she meets, greets and overcomes the obstacles in her path to completing the sweater.

Nora Murphy talks about women who create clothing for their loved ones and how items are crafted through relationships up and downs, events, difficult circumstances and how homemade clothing makes us feel connected to others.

We learn alot about the process of string, yarn making from its humble beginnings as raw fiber into the finished product that you see lining the shelves of the local yarn/craft shop.  There is much reference to traditions and cultures and how those very things bind women together over the past, the present and into the future.  It was an interesting read.

The book was published by New World Library in 2009.
